Transitions Tell Stories When you're trying to create the illusion of texture on an object, a great place to observe and gain insight on this is in the transition on the object between light and dark. Those edges will tell you everything. Kagata Village News We’ve had a victory recently. The loggers are out! And thankfully, only did a little bit of damage. Logging has been a huge problem in the Solomon Islands, and the Kagata area was one of the few places that had remained un-logged. Sadly the loggers do not care about the environment, and their practises resulted in runoff going into the creeks, polluting the creeks and dropping sediment onto the reef, as well as impacting the fishing. The whole ecosystem was affected. The village family is successfully organising carbon trading, so the villages will be paid not to log. A great solution for everyone in the village. In other news, the Rotary Club of Australia is in the process of shipping our crate of donated items to Honiara, containing two fridges, two freezers, solar panels, batteries inverters and all the stuff that goes with that, as well as fishing gear, clothes, first aid supplies and tools. A little bit of everything. That should be arriving soon, and hopefully installed in the village before Christmas. If you’d like to make a donation, you can! Unfortunately it is not tax deductible, but rest assured every cent goes directly to the village. Some of it goes to kids to get to Honiara (on a ferry boat that takes 24 hours to get there!) for dental and medical treatment. If you’d like to donate you can do so using these account details: The Solomons Project Workshop News No more workshops before Christmas. Nick Bultman started creating abstract art in 2021, quickly turning the documentation of his art form into a viral reality. Nick's focus is to create unique, dynamic, powerful works of art while sharing his journey to entertain and inspire others to manifest their creativity. Personally I love seeing the process of creation and planning that goes into Nick’s pieces, exploring freedom of movement and pushing the boundaries of conventional techniques. If you have a link you like, please share it with us! You can contact us to let us know. Thank you! This is the section where you can "get your name in lights!" (well at least out there in the internet world!). If you have works in progress you would love to show off, or finished pieces you are particularly proud of, we would love to see them! We especially like to hear about the story behind the creation. This month's submission comes from artist, graphic designer and all round great guy Timothy Clift From Tim: "Boulders Beach Beyond The Grass" In my 5 years living in the Northern Rivers, I have grown to love Coastal Banksias. They have striking leaves with their silvery underside and verdant green tops and the flowers are beautiful little pops of yellow. They represent a quintessential part of the beach landscape in this region and I have enjoyed featuring them in several of my coastal scenes. In this painting, “Boulders Beach Beyond the Grass”, the real heroes are the elements that frame the beach in the background; the tall wispy grasses and the sunlit Coastal Banksia.
This painting begins with blocking in the main colour areas – the brilliant blue sky and the cool dark shadows that will lurk beneath the grasses in the foreground. I like to work from the back of a picture to the front – it just seems logical to me. The next step is to add the horizon detail, working forward to the sunlit grass in the middle ground and then the large Coastal Banksia that frames the composition on the left side. This painting is largely about light and shade, so next I begin to layer the grasses in the foreground with the cooler blue-green hues that will form the grasses that sit beneath. Finally I place the sun-kissed highlights into the painting to bring it to life in both the tall wispy grasses of the foreground and the leaves in the banksia. Thanks so much for sharing your painting journey with us Tim!
